Mumbai, May 1, 2025 — The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) remain closed today, Wednesday, May 1, in observance of Maharashtra Day, a public holiday celebrated in the state to mark the formation of Maharashtra in 1960.
As per the official trading calendar issued by both exchanges, there will be no trading activity across equity, equity derivative, and SLB (Securities Lending and Borrowing) segments. Commodity markets regulated by the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will also remain shut for the morning session and will resume operations in the evening from 5:00 PM to 11:30 PM.
Regular trading across segments will resume on Thursday, May 2, 2025.
May 1 is one of the official holidays listed by the NSE and BSE for the calendar year 2025. Other upcoming holidays include Eid-ul-Adha (Bakrid) and Independence Day in August.
Significance of Maharashtra Day
Maharashtra Day, also known as Maharashtra Din, commemorates the formation of the state of Maharashtra on May 1, 1960, after the reorganization of states based on linguistic lines. The day is observed with official celebrations, flag hoisting ceremonies, and cultural programs across the state. Government offices, banks, schools, and many private businesses remain closed in Maharashtra in observance of the holiday.
Impact on Financial Markets
Although only Maharashtra observes this as a public holiday, it significantly affects India’s financial markets because both the NSE and BSE are headquartered in Mumbai. As a result, trading across the following segments is halted for the day:
- Equity segment
- Equity derivatives
- Currency derivatives
- Interest rate derivatives
- SLB segment
However, international markets remain open, and global cues will continue to influence investor sentiment and may lead to price adjustments when Indian markets reopen on May 2.
